Congrats PGH on the Rust Belt WIN!!! I knew we could do it.
Drewbacca AWD Tue Sep 30 19:54:00 2014
Only a few hours left... Don't forget to log your miles! Just one mile a day makes a difference, so if you know you went for a ride on a day that you didn't log, LOG IT! May-June-July-August-Sept! Pgh>Cle GO!
Jon A Webb Sat Sep 27 11:02:00 2014
You have to show them your Endomondo page with your points on it. They're real strict about that. I asked the bartender why and she said, "You have no idea what people will do for free beer."
Kitaira Starr Sat Sep 27 09:12:00 2014
a friend can have one of your beers - but not at the same time as you having one. At least that's what I gathered last time I asked... I have one left to redeem.
Drewbacca AWD Fri Sep 26 00:51:00 2014
1) Show up, show them who you are on a tablet the bartender has, fill out the sign up sheet and get a card. You don't need any special authentication... it's a painless sign up.
2) I think it is at the bartender's discretion.
3) Don't think so, and you're limited to I believe Dale's or EEB Pedal Pale.

*Enjoy what you can get. I haven't redeemed any of mine and I'm out of state until October. :( I was, however, there when a friend signed up.

Alex Rudnicky Thu Sep 25 19:19:00 2014
The NEWS reminds me that I haven't redeemed any of my OTB beers. Which might explain (some of) my thirst that follows on a ride... Anyway I don't see any instructions (other than "show up and get a free beer!"). So, can anyone enlighten me on the following:

1) What, exactly, is the authentication procedure? (What do I have to show up with.)
2) Seems I have to drink all of it up by the 30th, and at one glass per "visit". What is the definition of a visit? Go outside, wait n minutes, then go back in? (No, I don't bike drunk.)
3) Can I assign a drink to companions?

Thanks!

Mitchell Small Fri Sep 19 08:30:00 2014
Too bad I'm out of town next week on business and can't bring my bike!

Looking forward to the 321Ride on October 13. Doing the Metric Century option. Anyone else doing that ride?

Jon A Webb Tue Sep 16 08:50:00 2014
What a relief that we're competing on points, not miles vs Cleveland -- and we're more than 10% ahead with 2 weeks left to go.
jason henry miller Sun Sep 14 23:00:00 2014
if I won the lottery I would probably spend my whole summers riding on the gap and c&o
Drewbacca AWD Sun Sep 14 00:31:00 2014
Goldbond was my best friend after a few days on the GAP_C&O. LOL Thanks for the help Steve! Go Pgh!

Great job Steve, did the same route about a month ago.

369.26 total miles for my DC to PGH trip!! Miles included a 10.88 miles sight seeing ride around DC and to/from hotels, B &B each day.
Steve Koster Fri Sep 12 20:54:00 2014
Just finished DC to PGH bike ride at about 3pm today. Amazing time but saddle sore. Time to log all those miles :) Went with my friend's GF who made her ride a fundraiser at www.nicoleinspires.com
jason henry miller Thu Sep 11 22:20:00 2014
yeah! I see you yale! keep riding
Buffalo Buffalo Thu Sep 11 17:35:00 2014
Anybody know if it's possible to force the phone app to re-upload a trip? For some reason one trip from yesterday evening seems to have skipped a bunch of points in the middle (though the mileage total is correct), while another abruptly terminates 2/3 of the way through...
Yale Cohen Wed Sep 10 23:07:00 2014
The calorie calculation is a bit bogus. See https://getsatisfaction.com/endomondo/topics/calories_calculation_method-nygpi

For example, my stats show zero (0) kcal burned, since not all my stats (like speed) are known--I enter data manually...as per my Garmin Foretrex.

Drewbacca AWD Wed Sep 10 01:02:00 2014
@Kedin, LOL. Perhaps Endomondo just takes the Cuyahoga River into account? I wouldn't drink their water either! Wake up Pittsburgh, we still have time!
Kedin Morel Wed Sep 10 00:36:00 2014
I think its funny how it calculated that we drank more water and burned more calories yet Cleveland is up by 10k miles in calling bs but let's go pittsburgh
Alan Lucas Tue Sep 9 22:05:00 2014
What the hell, Pittsburgh?
Drewbacca AWD Sun Sep 7 22:54:00 2014
I call BS on at least one CLE rider who has absolutely nothing posted besides Sept 1 when he apparently rode 240 miles? Maybe just the lazy way of entering miles for the month but it looks really bad. I'll assume most are legit, besides that.
Robert Baiko Sun Sep 7 21:21:00 2014
Cleveland is up by 10 thousand
Robert Baiko Sat Sep 6 19:48:00 2014
I was comparing miles... The site shows it...
Drewbacca AWD Sat Sep 6 18:59:00 2014
Thanks Jon! Now I just need to figure out how I can fit in 68 miles/day for the rest of the month. *sigh*
Jon A Webb Sat Sep 6 08:45:00 2014
Cleveland made a page so you can compare the miles side by side at https://sites.google.com/site/rustbeltbattle/.
Drewbacca AWD Fri Sep 5 23:15:00 2014
@Robert, How do you compare miles against Cleveland as opposed to points? Also, being pushed by a friend to log my GAP mileage got the ball rolling and I'll likely get into the top 50 by the end of this despite no miles in May or most of June; do it!
jason henry miller Fri Sep 5 20:54:00 2014

Robert Baiko Fri Sep 5 09:48:00 2014
GUYS CLEVELAND IS 1000 miles behind us! TIME TO KICK IT INTO HIGH GEAR... EVERYONE NEEDS TO PUT IN AT LEAST 5 Miles a Day!
Robert Baiko Fri Sep 5 09:47:00 2014
Jason you can also tighten up your chain tensioner as well.
BRUN 66 Thu Sep 4 03:24:00 2014
Jason, sounds like you need a new chain, you need to change your chain out every 1000 to 1500 miles for about $12. Or change your gear cassette for about $80 or so when your chain grinds your gears down !
Robert Baiko Tue Sep 2 22:01:00 2014
Steve just got back from my trip same direction.... Added 335 to Pittsburgh. There is a Tony's pizza in Williamsport c&o 100 they have really good pasta. It might be muddy there were a lot of slippery puddles we ran into.
Dominik Konkolewicz Tue Sep 2 21:06:00 2014
Cleveland are back in it.... They are only 6500 miles behind. At the rate they are gaining miles this time next week, we will be behind....
Steve Koster Mon Sep 1 12:42:00 2014
5 laps around North Park. 25.52 @ 14.4 avg. lots of runners. good workout. 6 days until my DC to PGH trip :) hope we have good weather and no mech issues.
Jill Egyud Sun Aug 31 22:15:00 2014
One month left!!!
Dominik Konkolewicz Sun Aug 31 09:19:00 2014
Jason, this probably means you left your chain too long, and didnt change it early enough. The bad news is that from here, you will have to change at least your sproket and chain, and most likely chain ring.

A good resource for all things "bikey" is Sheldon Brown's website. I include the page on chain maintanance:
http://sheldonbrown.com/chains.html

jason henry miller Sat Aug 30 22:08:00 2014
some of my sprocket teeth are worn all the way down, can anyone tell me how the hell this happens?
Robert Baiko Tue Aug 26 13:38:00 2014
We need to kick it in to high gear... Only 20,000 miles ahead
Ken Emery Mon Aug 25 21:51:00 2014

Steve Koster Mon Aug 18 17:28:00 2014
Bob, wish you a speedy and full recovery :)

Had a good ride today on the Montour Trail 60.2 miles, avg speed 13.8 mph. Overcast but no rain.

Bob Karlovits Mon Aug 18 11:11:00 2014
I'm sorry to let my fellow Pittsburgh riders down, but today's ride is the last of the season for me.
Thursday, Aug. 22, I will be getting a new left knee to replace the one that has been crushed in wear related to a nasty car accident 25 years ago.
The idea is to return to a normal and pain-free existence.
I'll be riding with you next season.
See you then.

Clevelanders made a special site -- https://sites.google.com/site/rustbeltbattle/
Jon A Webb Fri Aug 15 08:43:00 2014
Well, it makes sense that it's miles, since that's what the Clevelanders seem to think. But when I try to see the current total miles here I only see the number for Pittsburgh. How do I see the total miles for Cleveland?
Patrick Roberts Thu Aug 14 21:22:00 2014
I thought it was miles too. Wouldn't be the first time in was wrong, but I have 4 people from Cleveland crashing the house for PedalPGH and want to make sure we have a lead.
Danny Yabs Thu Aug 14 11:35:00 2014
Anybody going to the bike-in movie tonight at the Center for the Arts? Its Premium Rush, that NYC bike messenger movie. Has anyone ever seen it?
Mikhail Evstiounin Thu Aug 14 10:36:00 2014
@Jon A Webb, leaderboard is all about points. Competition is about miles if I remember correctly.
Jon A Webb Thu Aug 14 08:32:00 2014
@Patrick, I don't get it. Here's what I do -- click 'National' on the main page, Leaderboard, choose Communities > 200K, shows Pittsburgh @ #172 1437.69 points. I search for Cleveland, it's at #449 566.62 points. What are you looking at? Shouldn't the leaderboard decide who wins?
Danny Yabs Wed Aug 6 09:35:00 2014
BikeFest starts Friday! Check this blog post that highlights some longer rides to get big NATIONAL BIKE CHALLENGE POINT$$$$$$ on! http://bikepgh.org/2013/08/05/get-the-best-national-bike-challenge-bang-for-your-bikefest-buck/

I wanted to commend our rider Arnie, he is an amazing rider and his legs don't know when to quit. Great job Arnie, you are an inspiration to everyone that rides a bicycle.
Michael Kostyzak Tue Aug 5 21:07:00 2014
It's Zak and it's alright Jason. Bring it by and let me tag it, I'll get it done in a couple days. I would get it sooner but I'm slammed with work and that's a good thing.
jason henry miller Tue Aug 5 20:37:00 2014
Hey Zack, I apologize for me giving you a hard time about the shifting, I was hoping you could re-pack my rear wheel bearing because it seems to be getting loose.
Patrick Roberts Tue Aug 5 11:05:00 2014
@Yale - The NBC webpage for Cleveland shows 1,175 riders and 417,758 miles. We are not crushing them, and they are closing the gap fast.
Dominik Konkolewicz Tue Aug 5 09:11:00 2014
Yale, if you look at the facebook page for the rust crown there is a side by side. Right now, the lead is even smaller, PGH is only 25 000 miles ahead now, meaning we have lost half our lead. I think you are correct, that they include surrounding communities.
Yale Cohen Mon Aug 4 00:17:00 2014
Patrick; Where are you getting your figures for Cleve/Pgh. I see that we have 367000 miles and Cleve has 182000--we're crushing them. We have 1250 riders and they have 522. Our rating is 1328 and theirs is 518. These numbers come from the "Communities" listing. I see these numbers are different from those in my headier. Is this an endomondo accounting problem or is Pgh/Cleve defined including the "surrounding" communities?
Steve Koster Sun Aug 3 22:27:00 2014
Nice 65.10 mile ride today on Ghost Town Trail up in Indiana, PA area. light rain in morning then cleared up rest of trip.
Patrick Roberts Sat Aug 2 08:12:00 2014
Our 50,000 mile lead has shrunk to about 30,000 over Cleveland. They are organizing rides with high numbers in attendance (try 800). I am asking the choir (you) to tell yinz friends to log their miles n@. Else all that smack talk is coming back on us!
Drewbacca AWD Fri Aug 1 01:53:00 2014
@Todd, when I look at my total points for the period (both on my profile and also on the Flock team list), it is counting my points from June which were logged retroactively... I assume it's the same for everyone.
Todd Derr Thu Jul 31 23:06:00 2014
Last year there was some other end-of-month issue, like your team and/or workplace wouldn't get credited for your points if you didn't enter them by the end of the month. Don't know if that's still the case.
Dominik Konkolewicz Thu Jul 31 15:31:00 2014
However, Cleveland is still coming back, closing the gap by about 10000 miles in this month at least. So please enter those miles people!
Drewbacca AWD Thu Jul 31 11:54:00 2014
Yep, end of the month is just for the monthly prize drawing... the points for the entire period can still be added. I just recently added my longer rides from May (I just opened this account this month). The key to remember is that for every day you ride a mile, that's twenty points right there... the more people we have signed up, the better. Also, Pittsburgh is invited to join the Cleveland crew for the ride to PedalPGH! It's all in the spirit of "frienemies."
Tricia Chicka Thu Jul 31 11:02:00 2014
Patrick, not lost for the Challenge Period I think, just for the prizes for that monthly drawing. But log 'em anywho!
Patrick Roberts Thu Jul 31 08:15:00 2014
Cleveland is closing the gap in miles to below 40,000. We may be over confident. They have some rides coming up that can close that gap in one single weekend. Heck, they are organizing group rides from Cleveland to Pittsburgh to ride PedalPGH! Please talk to to people who are not logging their miles. There are a ton of folks signed up who just don't log them. And after today I think all your July miles are lost if not logged in.
Yale Cohen Wed Jul 30 22:12:00 2014
Pittsburgh is home to 1446 of the 33198 riders in The Challenge. That's 4.33%!!! One out of twenty-three. And the Pirates are in first place and about to sweep a doubleheader against the Cards!!
Robert Baiko Tue Jul 29 10:55:00 2014
I rode to Cleveland in a weird way.... I basically used Google Maps Bike route but it was very similar to what people were saying.... I took Route 51 for a long time (not bad) all the way to the Ohio border and stayed the night in a bed and breakfast in Colombiana Ohio. The second day I was riding country roads for a while till I got to Kent. Once there I rode into the metroparks and was able to take trails all the way to Rockside Road in Valley View. From there you can go up Rockside avenue till you get to state road. Take State all the way to Cleveland. It was a good ride... Definately a 2 dayer.

OTB is on the South Side, on E Carson. Roughly halfway between the Hot Metal and Birmingham Bridges.
Steven Aronson Fri Jul 25 23:03:00 2014
Hey danny and john thanks! I understand what you guys are saying but every time I change the commute settings to be correct I refresh the page and it still says .7 miles. Its okay though cause I just enter the right amount as transport cycling. And I can't wait for my 2 free beers! Where's the otb although I can probably find out. Keep riding people!
jason henry miller Fri Jul 25 22:40:00 2014
looking for a good race bike for around 1000 bucks preferably like new condition
Danny Yabs Fri Jul 25 11:09:00 2014
Steven, click to the green "log miles" button on this homepage, on the next page click the "change your commute settings" link just above the calendar that shows your daily miles, from there you can manually enter the distance of your regular commutes for easy logging. Does that answer your question? Let me know if you need more help.
Jon A Webb Fri Jul 25 11:08:00 2014
I don't know what's wrong with your commute settings -- are you using the phone app? It may just be recording it wrong for some reason. You can enter the number directly on the web site, you don't have to use the phone.
Points accumulate automatically as you log them in this challenge.
Just go to the OTB and show them your points on the website. You will get a card and they'll punch it for each beer you consume.
Steven Aronson Thu Jul 24 16:24:00 2014
Hey Pittsburgh riders, Ive got some questions folks! First, I can't seem to get my commute settings right no matter how hard i try. It keeps telling me its .7 miles but my commute is 2.2. Also how do I accumulate points? and how do I redeem my beer??
Tricia Chicka Wed Jul 23 06:38:00 2014
In 2-3 days I should hit platinum! Yay more free beer! :) I second Drewbacca's sentiment on Pittsburgh.

Thanks Eric and “Congratulations” on your trip as well! The continuous uphill- grade from the Point to the Eastern Continental Divide can become mentally strenuous over a period of time. I’m sure you enjoyed your down-hill into Cumberland. I have to say that I did a lot of road riding after Rochester along Bike Route 5, the canal was flooded out in areas and the mosquitoes were treacherous, I had to change course. I enjoyed Little Falls & St. Johnsville, after the climb out of Little Falls the view was spectacular. I had some “good luck” with lodging at the Palatine Bridge and a great evening in Canajoharie. There is just something about the Mohawk that gives me a solemn peace of mind. Funny, it’s been almost a week after completing the ride and I can’t shake the experience it gave me.

You can do a 100 miles a day but the way I like to ride and stop in places it would be a 15 hour day for me. 50 to 70 miles a day is what I like to do based on where I'm going to eat dinner and sleep.
You should consider the Erie Canal ride next year, I really think you would enjoy !!!

@Brun 66- Never did the entire trail. One year we paired it with a trip around Niagara, Canada beginning in Grand Island, NY. Then took Rt. 31 out of Niagara, NY to get on the trail in Lockport. Another year we started in Lockport to Rochester then the Genesse Greenway trail to Letchworth State Park. Little town are neat. The Greenway was rough. The Point to DC in a couple of days. I hope you don't get the head winds we did traveling west. Enjoy the ride and stay safe.

The former begins on Sunday, the latter on Monday. You end up with two different weekly totals. And if you do your longer rides on Sundays things never seem to add up in a simple way. Just sayin'...

Well you can do either, camp or hotels, My best advice is to go on the website Parks & Trail NY, go to where it says Erie Canal Ride July 7 through the 14th. Once you go there along the right side it has a list, click on to the Riders Handbook that gives you all the details. The Erie Canal is not like the GAP at all, I've done the GAP a number of times and I have done the last 50 miles of the Erie Canal on the Mohawk Hudson River Section. If you're on the Erir Canal you sure won't feel like you're riding the GAP !!!
Once you look at the Handbook let me know what you think, I am leaving Pittsburgh for Buffalo Friday the 5th, I will be on the trail for a week so I won't be able to write until after July 15. I'm sure I'll have a lot of tips for this 400 miles when I get back.
Keep in touch ! Enjoy the Ride !!!

Jason, I'm doing the Erie Canal Trail from Buffalo NY to Albany NY 400 miles this week coming up, If you haven't done that yet you can get info on the Parks & Trail NY website.

sara moeller Tue Jul 1 14:35:00 2014
Jason: Go on Ragbrai alone and meet people. Or post on the Ragrai website that you are a single rider looking for a group. 10,000 riders daily and tons of fun! I have gone on Ragbrai several times and it never fails to be one of the best weeks of the year! Did I mention pie??? (Anyone who has done the ride will understand what I am talking about.)
jason henry miller Tue Jul 1 12:26:00 2014
I'm looking for a trail around 350 miles long, and a ton of scenery, doesn't matter where its at. I was going to do a 7 day tour called RAGBRAI but my friend backed out on me, plus I've heard Iowa is not the most exciting place to cycle. I would consider out of the country options but im to young and cant afford the travel.
Jonathan Cain Tue Jul 1 10:40:00 2014
Jason: Any specific areas you're looking at? Also, what are you aiming for distance-wise? There's quite a lot of options out there...one that I wouldn't mind doing again is out in Wisconsin: The 400 State Trail -> Elroy-Sparta Trail -> LaCrosse River Trail -> Great River State Park Trail. About 100 miles, one way.

some trailheads do indicate trails are only open during daylight hours, like the parks are.

It's worth pointing out that around the time that the East Carson (Arlington to 7th) bike lane was put in, it was strongly suggested by City staff that people use the trail instead, especially at night.

Hey everyone!
Your bike riding can help win money for your favorite Pittsburgh Park! Coca-Cola is awarding grants to the 3 most popular parks in the country and every time you ride for 20 minutes a day you earn 10 votes for your favorite park. If we all signed up we could easily be in the top 3! So far Frick Park has the most votes in the city. You can sign up here: https://parks.livepositively.com/parks/index.html

On the trails being closed after dark: I think the signs at the trail heads state "dusk to dawn" closure. I always assumed that the trails weren't "closed" perse, but it was more of a "ride at your own risk". It's not like it's trespassing or anything, right? That said, some of the trails can get awfully dark and people may or may not feel comfortable riding them without company and/or a strong head lamp.
Jonathan Cain Wed Jun 18 13:12:00 2014
Danny/Jim, There is no signage anywhere that indicates this, yet I've been hassled by the police on occasion when riding home from work after dark. I was actually told not to bother calling if I had an issue. Protect and serve, my a$$. It sure is safer riding down the South Side trail at 2am versus riding down Carson St. Just another case of too many cops not being aware of the law.

Amy M,
The GAP from the Boston Bridge to Cumberland MD is not black-top paved like the lower parts of the trail on the Eliza Furnace Rail Trail aka Jail Trail, the Three River Heritage or Steel Valley Trail section of the GAP , the GAP from Boston to Cumberland is a pretty smooth surface of dirt, sand and crushed stone. Of course the conditions depend on if it’s raining or not, it does drain well, so you can ride it in the rain. It’s an uphill grade from Pittsburgh to the Eastern Divide.
Nice B&B’s in West Newton & Rockwood, there right on the trail, two good stops heading east.
Enjoy the Ride!!!

Taking our family of seven on the Rainbow Kitchen Ride for Hunger tomorrow just down the hill. I've been amazed by how many people are already using the new trail at all times of day. Met a guy last week, maybe 55 y/o, who is totally not a biker type who has been commuting 17 miles to downtown from deepest W. Mifflin for three years--and is now happy not to have to climb the Homestead Grays Bridge. Also lots of people whose only transportation is a bike are now using the trail to link up Southside to Homestead.

Everyday I take the trail from the 40th street bridge to PNC park and cross the bridge to the point. I always find rest at the point before heading back up the other side of the river. I like the resting part of the ride. ;)

Robert: hit 'National' in the upper left, then 'Leaderboard'.
Under the header image, hit 'Communities', then use the 'Show' dropdown to restrict to large ('Class I') cities.

Rankings are by points-per-thousand-riders. As of this writing (5/22 15:22), Pittsburgh is 3rd among large cities, #144 overall, with 312.30; Cleveland is 7th, #450 overall, with 103.56; and Philadelphia is 15th, #843 overall, with 50.13 ppt. To see actual mileage & ridership, click on the city name (open in a new tab to avoid the obnoxiousness of having to go back through the process to find the list when you return...).

Great job on Friday. Bike Pittsburgh is making a difference. I thank you for continuing your efforts to make our streets safer for those of us that pedal to work. Consider the next event in Milvale. I'm planning a 400K randonneur ride to Cleveland to pick up the crown. We would not necessarily physically pick the crown up, but we could at least pee in Lake Erie, or something like that. You can't. OTB is not giving away a free beer until you get 250 points. I tried to get my first free beer last night, and they would not honor, or even acknowledge the posting on this page that says 100 points = 1 drink. I am curious if it's possible to override the zip code/comunity association for the Bike Challenge? Wilkins Township (a great place to ride a bike!) has five zip codes and no post office, so our bicycling residents will get lumped in with Pittsburgh, Turtle Creek, and possibly other municipalities in the "Local Communities" leaderboard.

Hey Mary,

Consider Bike Pittsburgh a resource.

Especially lots of material and lots of friendly folks on the board to point you to useful things if you're the least bit open to cycling for transportation. I thought it was crazy myself until last summer, but if you'd like more time, money, energy, and joy in your life, it's crazy not to.

It's a lot more doable than you probably think, there are gentle ramps into it (group rides, riding Sunday morning when the roads are mostly empty, etc..) and there are people not just willing, but eager to help.

Have a great trip!

Cheers,
Ben

Will be slacking in the month of May, will be traveling for 5 weeks. I will try to rent a bike, as long as there are trails available. Me and cars don't mix on the same road, I am a coward that way. Hoping my buddy Rachel will get some miles racked up for us. I hope everyone out there riding has a great time! :)

Does anyone know whether we have to create new teams this year? Our team (non-workplace) from last year isn't automatically showing up in this year's Leaderboard, so I'm wondering if in fact we need to create a new team and invite everyone to join again this year? FWIW, I can still see last year's team and its members in my Friends tab.
Ben Yogman Thu May 1 21:05:00 2014
That's good. Hopefully we'll start seeing stuff like that pop up soon.

Now we just need the Radonneurs to take a week off and do a "we challenge thee" ride out to Madison and back!

Lou Fineberg Thu May 1 20:47:00 2014
I just contacted a source very close to Danny Chew who says on Saturday alone Chewman rode 235 miles. Hopefully promise of another national title will be enough to sway him.
Ben Yogman Thu May 1 20:40:00 2014
Where's Danny Chew?

I'd have figured he'd he'd already be enjoying his first free drink by now, no?

Danny, your city needs you!

I love the fact that each time I come back in there's more riders signed up, and my ranking has slipped. Four rides today and I'm currently #... 59 (ok, they were all very short).

I need a longer commute I guess.

Jamin Bogi Thu May 1 19:20:00 2014
OK, let's be honest. The back tire has trouble holding air. My wrists are...weaker than I'd like. The pannier is stable but keeps casting me glances like it's thinking about jumping off. My bike lock key is torqued. It's hot. It's cold. It's humid. It's arid.

But none of that matters, because after Day One of the challenge, I feel great--and have 32 points! Free beer before I know it!

Ok team PGH the Challenge is less than a week away. It's time to talk smack on two cities. The city of Brotherly Love because they're the fifth largest city in the US and unless they get it together we have little chance of taking PA to the top of the leaderboard and the Mistake by the Lake because there's no way we can let them claim the Rust Belt crown. Let's go PGH!

You have to show them your Endomondo page with your points on it. They're real strict about that. I asked the bartender why and she said, "You have no idea what people will do for free beer."
Kitaira Starr Fri Sep 27 14:12:00 2013
a friend can have one of your beers - but not at the same time as you having one. At least that's what I gathered last time I asked... I have one left to redeem.

Thanks!

The calorie calculation is a bit bogus. See https://getsatisfaction.com/endomondo/topics/calories_calculation_method-nygpi

For example, my stats show zero (0) kcal burned, since not all my stats (like speed) are known--I enter data manually...as per my Garmin Foretrex.

Jason, this probably means you left your chain too long, and didnt change it early enough. The bad news is that from here, you will have to change at least your sproket and chain, and most likely chain ring.

A good resource for all things "bikey" is Sheldon Brown's website. I include the page on chain maintanance:

I'm sorry to let my fellow Pittsburgh riders down, but today's ride is the last of the season for me.
Thursday, Aug. 22, I will be getting a new left knee to replace the one that has been crushed in wear related to a nasty car accident 25 years ago.
The idea is to return to a normal and pain-free existence.
I'll be riding with you next season.
See you then.

Yale, if you look at the facebook page for the rust crown there is a side by side. Right now, the lead is even smaller, PGH is only 25 000 miles ahead now, meaning we have lost half our lead. I think you are correct, that they include surrounding communities.

The key to remember is that for every day you ride a mile, that's twenty points right there... the more people we have signed up, the better. Also, Pittsburgh is invited to join the Cleveland crew for the ride to PedalPGH! It's all in the spirit of "frienemies."

Steven, click to the green "log miles" button on this homepage, on the next page click the "change your commute settings" link just above the calendar that shows your daily miles, from there you can manually enter the distance of your regular commutes for easy logging. Does that answer your question? Let me know if you need more help.

There is just something about the Mohawk that gives me a solemn peace of mind. Funny, it’s been almost a week after completing the ride and I can’t shake the experience it gave me.

Robert, I tried doing Pgh-DC last Labor Day weekend and got really sick the morning of the third day. I went from McKeepsort-Rockwood on Day 1, then Rockwood to Hancock, MD the enxt day, about 90-100 miles each day. It proved to be too much for me. Good luck and be careful.

Thanks Eric and “Congratulations” on your trip as well! The continuous uphill- grade from the Point to the Eastern Continental Divide can become mentally strenuous over a period of time. Thanks Jason, You are right, its fun to take your time and stop in all the little towns for a drink, something to eat and talk to the locals.

I've seen a LOT of potholes around the city and just terrible roads. Make sure you guys report some of the conditions to the 311 office. The more of us that show them what's up, the better! http://www.pittsburghpa.gov/311/form

Centre Ave and S Millvale Ave [Oakland/Bloomfield] are pretty terrible, so I reported it today.

Jake Baechle Sun Jun 23 11:29:00 2013
Thank you to everyone who has been logging workouts for Frick Park! In 4 days the park has moved up from 80th place to 25th place! If we keep up the pace Frick Park could be voted America's favorite park!

Got to work this morning and found they installed a bike rack outside my building downtown next to the pole I lock my bike to everyday... Awesome.
Buffalo Buffalo Wed Jun 19 13:02:00 2013
some trailheads do indicate trails are only open during daylight hours, like the parks are.

It's worth pointing out that around the time that the East Carson (Arlington to 7th) bike lane was put in, it was strongly suggested by City staff that people use the trail instead, especially at night.

Jake Baechle Wed Jun 19 08:37:00 2013

Jonathan Cain Tue Jun 18 08:12:00 2013
Danny/Jim, There is no signage anywhere that indicates this, yet I've been hassled by the police on occasion when riding home from work after dark. I was actually told not to bother calling if I had an issue. Protect and serve, my a$$. It sure is safer riding down the South Side trail at 2am versus riding down Carson St. Just another case of too many cops not being aware of the law.
Patrick Roberts Mon Jun 17 20:54:00 2013
Consider that we have riders that have not logged their miles. Hence we might actually have more miles per rider than Cleveland! Keep riding. I will throw a tremendous party in October when we receive our rustcrown n@!!
Danny Yabs Mon Jun 17 16:27:00 2013
PGH's bikeways are always open, and they're an incredible, ever-improving, resource for transportation. Did you encounter one what looked closed?
Jim Leonard Mon Jun 17 11:11:00 2013
Why do all of the bike trails around PGH close from dusk to dawn? I thought the city was supposed to be taking cycling seriously as a form of transport.

Have your brother spray paint the kitty litter boxes. I think that would help!

Hey fellow riders, take a break from logging miles, call your state rep and ask them to support Senate Bill 1's dedicated funding for bike/ped improvements! http://bikepgh.org/2013/06/13/ask-your-pa-representative-to-vote-for-bicycle-and-pedestrian-funding/
jason henry miller Thu Jun 13 14:35:00 2013
Amy I would go with the ortlieb bags, they may be a little pricy but there so big that you wont need front bags but yet they roll down to appear smaller if you don't have a lot in them. Plus Rei will give you a lifetime warranty on them so if for any reason you aren't satisfied they will give 100% of your money back.

I think that my goal for this Challenge is to at-a-minimum get to the 2,500 Points. Also, to try and get a 1000 points per month, to MAYBE hit the 5,000 points as an over-achiever.

Right now I didn't make the "May" 1,000 points, but will try to kick it up and see if I can keep that :)

Amy M,
The GAP from the Boston Bridge to Cumberland MD is not black-top paved like the lower parts of the trail on the Eliza Furnace Rail Trail aka Jail Trail, the Three River Heritage or Steel Valley Trail section of the GAP , the GAP from Boston to Cumberland is a pretty smooth surface of dirt, sand and crushed stone.
Patrick Roberts Sun Jun 2 20:45:00 2013
The Gap is paved from the Jail Trail downtown all the way to McKeesport. Downtown the route is on paved roads.
Amy M Sun Jun 2 19:36:00 2013
Is the whole Great Allegheny Passage starting from Homestead paved?
Eric Rickin Sat Jun 1 16:44:00 2013
On the North Shore Trail it is pretty much exactly 6 miles from the Prison by the McKees Rocks Bridge to the 40th Street bridge, and it is finally ALL PAVED!
BRUN 66 Fri May 31 23:25:00 2013
Ryan, don’t forget the North Shores Trail, at the end of Station Square cross over Ft. Pitt Bridge that takes you to the “Point” cross the Ft. Duquesne Bridge and travel to the right along the Ohio River to the Western Penitentiary and back. It adds about 7 miles of traffic free riding on a paved surface.
Ryan McDermott Fri May 31 23:03:00 2013
Just moved to Homestead, PA, and have been riding the smooth commute through Sandcastle to Oakland (almost) every day.
Christine Cato Thu May 30 19:48:00 2013

I ride up through St Mary's, the Catholic cemetery next to Allegheny. Curiously, the huge uphill at the start is actually the calmest, easiest part of my ride, since the rest of it is in Bloomfield & Oakland traffic...
Patrick Roberts Thu May 30 08:16:00 2013
I bomb Federal in the morning. I climb back up through Riverview Park in the evening. My pants are getting bigger and my jerseys almost fit once again!
Joe Frambach Wed May 29 21:50:00 2013
I enjoy the patches of Liberty where the bike lane turns into a sharrow for half a block, but I have to negotiate regular traffic anyway. And I really love how the buses race past me to get to the next stop 100ft faster; the wind they generate is refreshing.
Jen Streeter Wed May 29 19:52:00 2013
Everyday I take the trail from the 40th street bridge to PNC park and cross the bridge to the point. I always find rest at the point before heading back up the other side of the river. I like the resting part of the ride. ;)

Buffalo Buffalo Wed May 22 15:16:00 2013
Robert: hit 'National' in the upper left, then 'Leaderboard'.

I'm planning a 400K randonneur ride to Cleveland to pick up the crown. We would not necessarily physically pick the crown up, but we could at least pee in Lake Erie, or something like that. This would be after the end of the challenge, sometime in early October. So if you're interested in long-distance rides, keep this in mind.

Heidi-Barbara Muse Sun May 5 22:21:00 2013
You can't. OTB is not giving away a free beer until you get 250 points. I tried to get my first free beer last night, and they would not honor, or even acknowledge the posting on this page that says 100 points = 1 drink. The manager (via our waitress) claims their policy has always required 250 points for the first free drink. Please, let us know if you get one for 100 points.

@Chris, it's entirely honor system. Just don't give them a reason to tighten the policy, it'll be unfair to everyone. @Nick, I'm seeing the same thing happen here. I think they update and cache some aggregate statistics on a schedule. Probably every few hours or late at night when the system isn't under heavy use.
Nick Drombosky Fri May 3 14:36:00 2013

Cheers,
Ben

Mary Ramage Wed May 1 17:40:00 2013
Will be slacking in the month of May, will be traveling for 5 weeks. I will try to rent a bike, as long as there are trails available. Me and cars don't mix on the same road, I am a coward that way. Hoping my buddy Rachel will get some miles racked up for us. I hope everyone out there riding has a great time! :)
Lou Fineberg Wed May 1 16:18:00 2013
You have to create the team again. Jim as the long standing leader of the Car Free Fridays breakfast gatherings why don't you and your legions join the Car Free Fridays team this year?
Jim Morgan Wed May 1 16:06:00 2013
Does anyone know whether we have to create new teams this year? Our team (non-workplace) from last year isn't automatically showing up in this year's Leaderboard, so I'm wondering if in fact we need to create a new team and invite everyone to join again this year? FWIW, I can still see last year's team and its members in my Friends tab.
Ben Yogman Wed May 1 16:05:00 2013
That's good. Hopefully we'll start seeing stuff like that pop up soon.

Now we just need the Radonneurs to take a week off and do a "we challenge thee" ride out to Madison and back!

Lou Fineberg Wed May 1 15:47:00 2013
I just contacted a source very close to Danny Chew who says on Saturday alone Chewman rode 235 miles. Hopefully promise of another national title will be enough to sway him.
Ben Yogman Wed May 1 15:40:00 2013
Where's Danny Chew?

I'd have figured he'd he'd already be enjoying his first free drink by now, no?

Danny, your city needs you!

Ben Yogman Wed May 1 15:31:00 2013
I love the fact that each time I come back in there's more riders signed up, and my ranking has slipped. Four rides today and I'm currently #... 59 (ok, they were all very short).

I need a longer commute I guess.

Jamin Bogi Wed May 1 14:20:00 2013
OK, let's be honest.

By riding in the challenge you're showing that people in PGH ride bikes! That means Pittsburgh city officials, representatives, planners and police will see that they need to ensure our city's streets are safe for all users. TAKE ACTION! get everyone to join the challenge and sign our petition at BIKEPGH.ORG

PGH emerged from the 2012 bike challenge wearing the Rust Crown. We got more points, rode more miles, registereed more riders than anyone else in the Rust Belt. This year Cleveland thinks their going to take it from us. They've been calling us out all over their and social media. But hey, PGH has never backed down from some competition.

Invite your friends, build your teams, lets pedal Pittsburgh to the top!

Suggestion: Since my main use of this site is to track mileage for the whole year, it would be really nice to have a summary stat someplace handy that shows Miles Since January 1, 2013. Maybe it's there, but it's not blatantly obvious, and (I think) needs to be.

@Joellen. If you were on the Montour or in S. Fayette/Cecil Twp. area last week it was prob me w/o the beard. Trip was a lot fun. The little traverse wheelway was great. Started in Petoskey to Charlevoix then back to Harbor Springs. Day 2 we rode the TART trail thru Traverse City to the Leelanau trail that took us to Suttons Bay. Day 3 was the Mission Loop. It took us up the peninsula that splits Grand Traverse Bay. It was the most scenic with views of both the east & west arms of the bay. Made stops at Old Mission, the lighthouse & Jollypumpkin brewing. Trails were paved; Mission Loop was road. Need a week to cover just the trails/loops for my road tires; there seems to b even more fat tire trails. Little towns were great highly recommend the trip up. Take care!

why, when i try to enter a pre-determined commute amount, does it give me other numbers than my total amount? (for example, I commute one-way 4.68 mi; when I enter commute x2, I get a number like 9.03 instead of 9.36)

@Brandee

If vibration is an issue, also try lowering the pressure in your tires. If they're pumped up to the max they may be really hard hitting bumps and changes in the road, whereas a less inflated tire would absorb those shocks

Christina Barry Sun Jul 8 15:14:00 2012
PGH Riders! You owe it to yourselves to take a ride up to Tioga County and ride the beautiful Pine Creek Trail. Joe and I drove up this past weekend and did this gorgeous trail for round trip total of 132 miles. We stayed in Slate Run (about mid point) and did the northern section on FRI and the southern section SAT. This is the Grand Canyon of PA and it is truly GORGEOUS and doable -- even in 98+ heat. Looking forward to going up again in the fall for the spectacular colors. Congraulations to al of us Pgh Riders for biking thru this heat Keep cool . . .
Julie Brooks Sat Jul 7 16:19:00 2012
C'mon Endo. Update our teams' points already.
Jonathan Cain Thu Jul 5 10:40:00 2012
@Brandee - Where'd you get your bike? They should have offered to fit you on the bike, it might be worth a trip back to help them work with you to get things dialed-in.
Michael Boyd Wed Jul 4 18:16:00 2012
@Brandee - if your saddle height and tilt (generally the nose and rear of the saddle should be level) are generally comfortable you might try raising your handlebars. A good place to start is with the bar and saddle roughly even with each other (having the bar lower than that can work if you are flexible and have a strong core).
Lou Fineberg Tue Jul 3 11:52:00 2012
@ j. marko . . . thanks for the update.

I keep list of the comments and suggestions that are posted here and report them to the developers. @ Todd, your suggestion for a grace period is noted.

Awesome to see that we've got 1000 + subscribers. Remind friends and teammates to submit their miles!

Julie Brooks Mon Jul 2 21:30:00 2012
@brandee you may not need to lower your saddle. rather, you might play with the angle on it. i tilted the front of my own saddle just a few degrees up and it made all the difference.
Brandee Abel Mon Jul 2 18:48:00 2012
@Lucia - thanks! I do have padded gloves, but I'll pay attention to how tightly I grip the handlebar and try lowering my saddle slightly. I'm fairly tall, so my seat is up really high. Thanks again!
Lucia M Aguirre Sun Jul 1 23:50:00 2012
@Brandee: (1) try wearing cycling gloves with padding to soften the bike vibration (2) maybe you are holding the handlebars too tight and not changing hand-positions often to imrpove circulation (3) you are leaning on the handlebars too much/putting too much weight on your hands/wrists -you would need to adjust your saddle angle/height, making sure your body/hand/arm position feels natueal on the bike and not too forced. --Hope this helps!
Brandee Abel Sun Jul 1 22:00:00 2012

david hunt Fri Jun 29 19:14:00 2012
@ shirk the more you do it the easier it gets.
j. marko Fri Jun 29 12:39:00 2012
I just got a response to a question I asked at the support center about replacing an injured player. Apparently the points are accumulated by month. So if you replace a team member mid-month, the old player’s points will disappear for that month, and the new team member’s points will be used for that whole month. So be careful on the timing of any changes to team makeup.
Todd Derr Thu Jun 28 22:36:00 2012
I thought about using my phone but I was planning to keep it off since I don't know if I'll get a chance to recharge it.

I think it's still a valid point that there should be a grace period although I don't think I'm going to be able to ride now due to the extreme heat (90-100 all week)... bummed.

william e shirk jr Thu Jun 28 15:44:00 2012
Did sycamore tues night after work, sheesh, that experience knocked me down a peg! Or two...
Brad Maloney Wed Jun 27 22:33:00 2012
@Todd - do you have the app on your phone? You can at least log those miles live as they happen. When I'm on the GAP I like to turn off all unnecessary antennas (wifi, cell data) to conserve battery. Once I think I'm done for the day, I'll turn cell data back on and let the Endomondo app send my trip report out. It happens automatically in the background. Hope that helps - enjoy your GAP trip!
Todd Derr Wed Jun 27 20:17:00 2012
I think the "all miles must be logged by the end of the month" rule should have a grace period of at least a week. If I head out on the GAP this weekend I won't be able to log the miles until I get home and it will cost me a lot of points.
j. marko Tue Jun 26 21:56:00 2012
We have a team member that broke his wrist and won't be able to ride for six weeks or so. Does anyone know how the team standings work? I mean if we kick the injured rider off the team and sign up a new person do the old points go away? If we sign up someone who has already been logging miles in the challenge does the team only receive points from the date the new person joins the team?
Eric Malazich Tue Jun 26 18:12:00 2012

922 riders! We're getting very close to 1000, which would be a great milestone for PGH!

@ JIm did your team eventually get credit for the points? We have an ongoing list of fixes for the developer. It's the first year so there's bound to be some kinks. Thanks for letting us know.

@Allison have you gotten beyond 666? If not, I can get the name of a good priest ;-)

Joellen Popma Tue Jun 5 21:46:00 2012
Great biking trails in Michigan ! I had great rides there on extensive bike specific trails. Beautiful lakeside and interior trails. I highly recommend. Leave for Pitt to DC on thurs!

@jim. you had to log your may points by june 1st for them to count in the standings. Nbc sent out an email the last week of may stating this and Im guessing it will be the same w june, july, and august.

Julie Brooks Thu May 31 15:28:00 2012
Same thing on my end.
Joellen Popma Thu May 31 14:50:00 2012
Oh and I had used the Edmonds app so it isn't a difference between using the app or manually logging the miles.
Joellen Popma Thu May 31 14:47:00 2012
The same thing is happening to me and my team members. Obviously it is working for some as I keep getting lower in the rankings. I tried deleting the mileage and doing manually to no avail.
James Kiley Thu May 31 14:33:00 2012
I logged my miles manually about five hours ago and they still haven't showed up in my point total. They show up in my 'this week' and 'today' miles tallies, but not my points. Anybody see this before?

Sarah Pearman Thu May 24 20:43:00 2012
Hmmm. I wonder if turning off wifi is actually making the battery run down faster. When wifi is on, the iPhone uses "assisted" GPS by picking up location info from nearby routers to help it determine your location more efficiently and accurately. I'm not 100% sure whether it would help in your situation, but it's worth a try to turn the wifi back on and see if that helps.
Julie Brooks Thu May 24 15:03:00 2012
Sarah, yea, I have been turning off the screen. Thanks for the suggestion, though. Hmmm...I'm also turning off wifi, and various other components.
Sarah Pearman Thu May 24 14:14:00 2012
Julie, are you turning the screen off? If not, that's definitely the first step since the Endomondo app leaves it on all the time by default, which kills the battery exceptionally fast.
Julie Brooks Thu May 24 13:49:00 2012
If anyone has suggestions for how to prevent the iPhone from being drained, sometimes completely, while out on a ride, I'd really appreciate it. Sometimes my phone battery empties before I finish a ride. I always make sure to have it at 100% before leaving. And, certainly, I do log the "missed miles" when I get home to my iPad. It's just an annoyance. Not a deal-breaker. Thanks.
Jason Hare Thu May 24 09:18:00 2012
Sorry- 3 typical trips logged, only the first of the three registers mileage. Why bother?
Jason Hare Thu May 24 09:11:00 2012
Maybe I'm not doing it right. I have 2 typical trips logged, but when I put anything but the first of the three it doesn't log the #s- Just gives me a total of nil, not even 0, just a dash. I had to enter all of my trips (at once, I will admit) today, but had to do a short trip and multiply to get the total I rode. Maybe that is what I am supposed to do....
Scott Bricker Thu May 24 09:04:00 2012
Hmm, maybe on the app download page in iTunes if you have an iPhone? All you really need to do is enter in your info in the settings tab, choose the type of riding you're doing on the main page, and then press start. Be vigilent about stopping it and clicking "done" after or it will drain your battery.
Tim Schooley Thu May 24 08:01:00 2012
Scott, I've just been assuming that I don't know how to use the app, which is all too plausible since I'm a smart phone newbie to begin with. Any feedback on where to find some instructions? The app on my phone seems to acknowledge my account when I press on the "Friends" function. My picture comes up and it notes that I've been on rides.....but I see no link or way to access my points. Thanks for whatever you can do but don't go out of your way too much.
Scott Bricker Thu May 24 07:42:00 2012
We'll make a request to Endomondo and ask if they can add the medals to the app.
Tim Schooley Thu May 24 06:00:00 2012
Yeah, that's the way I understand it as well, Ashley. But I was in there for lunch, and it was busy, and the place was operating with a pretty bare bones staff so that the guy behind the bar was also waiting on tables....and I felt silly asking him to go track down a computer to see that I was eligible for a free beer when he obviously had plenty of other things to do. That's a good idea, James. I'll try that. OTC has a thing for NBC participants where if you can show you've reached 50, 100 and 500 points, they'll give you a free beer for each benchmark. They have stamp cards for it.
James Funderburgh Wed May 23 22:32:00 2012
I agree. the phone app is limited. You can find your point total by navigating to this site on Safari on you phone if you do not want to drag you laptop to OTB. How many points do you need for a beer?
Ashley C Wed May 23 21:47:00 2012
@Tim, as I understood it, as long as you can log in at all (which, since you're posting here, I assume you can) you will be able to claim your beer. I think I read that there will be access to Endomondo at OTB for those logging miles without the app.
Tim Schooley Wed May 23 21:24:00 2012
Smart phone, dumb user.....as a new iPhone person, I'm struggling to figure how to use the endomondo app so that I can bring up my National Bike Challenge tally on it. And I haven't been able to find any good instructions for it. While I mostly use the program on my laptop anyway, this is an urgent issue since I'm almost eligible for a third beer at OTB....when I haven't been able to prove my tally to enjoy the first two. (A Pittsburgh reference for anybody anywhere else paying enough attention to be confused by this.) Anybody out there have any advice/instructions on this?
Stuart Strickland Wed May 23 20:57:00 2012
I log my data once, first thing upon sitting down at the computer, then I go check email, Facebook, the message board, etc. Fifteen minutes or so later, the data has registered. That's all ya gotta do.
Lou Fineberg Tue May 22 19:24:00 2012
Justin thanks for the observation. My guess is that it mainly is the result of people repeatedly logging the trip until it posts. It's tough to police this and get word out to people to be more aware. We've brought the issue to the developers attention and will continue to do so. There's definitely some kinks that need to be worked out.
Justin Long Tue May 22 17:46:00 2012
Question about logging miles and points. I've noticed that when looking at peoples workout profiles on endomondo that many people have workouts for the same distance and time logged multiple times on the same day. Im curious as to if they are doing laps or if they keep logging the same workout in until it post to their points and leaderboard not realizing that they are posting the same workout multiple times. For example, one rider has 4 workouts logged at the same time and same distance, and 5 workouts listed at the same time and distance all in one day. Can someone take a look at this and explain?
Barbara Jensen Tue May 22 10:39:00 2012
Just earned my third beer (500 points), but haven't had time to get to OTB to redeem! Can't wait for summer to start so I can take more longer rides.
Julie Brooks Sun May 20 21:40:00 2012
Posting a little bit late, but wanted to put a big shout-out to Bike Pgh for another great Bike to Work Day! The people at stations around the city were wonderful, and the swag is awesome!
Todd Derr Sat May 19 22:24:00 2012
38 miles on the GAP -> 3rd pint! Limestone is also worth a multiplier...
Joellen Popma Sat May 19 16:46:00 2012

Steve Swartzlander Sat May 19 15:48:00 2012

Jim Leonard Sat May 19 13:10:00 2012
Even if riding over the hills around pgh doesn't warrant extra points, hauling an extra 130 pounds of groceries on your bike over those hills should.
Bill Kammermeier Fri May 18 17:41:00 2012
@Tim Cook.. I have noticed the same thing. It doesn't always add the points up correctly.
Scott Bricker Fri May 18 16:21:00 2012
@Bryan Nope. You can hit every level and then go in to redeem. Only one free beer per visit though.
David Troyer Fri May 18 15:37:00 2012
@Bryan. I certainly hope not.
Lucia M Aguirre Fri May 18 14:45:00 2012

Tirzah Griffin Fri May 18 09:35:00 2012
trying to figure out how to invite someone to join the site...
Tim Cook Thu May 17 20:54:00 2012
The site is still really buggy at recording points, it failed to record my 20 points from 5 days ago and still hasn't. Also, sometimes when you input miles on a certain day, it adds them to the previous day instead... all sorts of weird things.
Bryan Hood Thu May 17 20:16:00 2012
So do we lose our free beer if we hit the next level before redeeming it?
Seth Gernot Thu May 17 17:09:00 2012
3rd pint.....so close, so close.
Buffalo Buffalo Wed May 16 23:19:00 2012
I don't ride Downtown much, so I'd forgotten just how bad GPS can get down there. Really wish Endomondo had the ability to add and remove intermediate points, the way MapMy[Activity] does, instead of just move them around.
Stuart Strickland Wed May 16 21:50:00 2012
I don't use GPS. Long before this website came along, I used MapMyRide to keep track of my routine trips. Each trip I built myself using the mapping tool on that site. It lets me store and name each of these. So, anytime I want to check a distance, I go there first, look up the ride I just did, and then just type the mileage in here. I use the Endomondo commute tool to keep track of my four most common trips, which comprise over half of my total trips.
David White Wed May 16 09:41:00 2012
Keep in mind that the GPS is also only giving you data "as the crow flies" and so they tend to be less accurate when you're riding in hilly areas.
David Robb Sat May 12 23:12:00 2012
I use the free app. I still think its really cool.
David Robb Sat May 12 23:03:00 2012
My buddies bike computer clocks a ride we do at 22 miles. Endomondo has it at 18.9 miles. It's a mountain bike ride with a lot of winding trails. My buddy said another friend has said that his GPS underestimates mileage on mountain bike rides by 15% which just about equals the difference. GPS polling frequency as someone put it would explain why. If the device thinks you are traveling in a straight line it would miss some of the distance. Road riding wouldn't have as much of a difference. I'm not concerned, but there's definitely a difference using GPS vs a bike computer.
Kento Ohmori Fri May 11 17:21:00 2012
My Garmin Edge, Endomondo Pro (Android), and my cycle computer are all within 1/10 to 1/5 of a mile for my rides yesterday. I know; I have a problem with gadgets....
Dan Yablonsky Fri May 11 15:45:00 2012
Thats the first we've heard of the issue, but we brought it to the attention of the national challenge coordinators. Is anyone else questioning the accuracy of the app?
Peter Streibig Thu May 10 10:30:00 2012
Has anyone else noticed the endomondo iPhone app is a bit off?
I track with both RunKeeper and endomondo, and the GPS polling frequency with Runkeeper is much more frequent. What this equates to on our squirrelly streets is a discrepancy in accuracy. Endomondo says I rode 10.55mi this morning. Runkeeper says it was 11.82. Both say the trip was within 30sec. (38.56 for RK and 38:31 for E, which makes sense as I turn RK on first and off last)
Tim Cook Wed May 9 21:39:00 2012
EVERYWHERE is re-paving... which is great, but also terrible.
Lou Fineberg Wed May 9 18:52:00 2012
@ Colin. I think the twenty points sometimes is delayed. It eventually should register.
David White Wed May 9 13:57:00 2012
I just noticed that if you revise one of your stored commutes it continues to use the old mileage though the drop-down displays the new mileage. You need to delete it and replace it with a new one instead.
Steve Eckenrode Wed May 9 11:24:00 2012
Greenfield Ave from Second Avenue is a mess right now.
Colin Ashe Wed May 9 10:07:00 2012
The other day I got points for my miles but not my 20 points for the day. I'm still short 20 points. Has anyone else had this problem?

Commute Triathlon this morning! Running out the door, riding to work and practically swimming through the rain!
Scott Bricker Tue May 8 14:48:00 2012
You can just use the Endomondo app.
Adam J Rauf Tue May 8 09:51:00 2012
what app are we supposed to use to log? can we not just use the web logging? does anyone know?

I don't typically carry my phone when I ride, but I guess I could if I need to?

And also thanks for the heads-up on the free beer as well. Not like I'm in any rush to redeem them. I'm doing this to get in better shape and eventually commute to work as often as possible.

Tricia Chicka Tue May 8 06:44:00 2012
ohh thanks for the tip on the free beer delay...I'll just wait until I hoard some more pints...I have 2.

I agree Jim, it would be nice to get bonus points for faster/steeper elevations. LIke if you increase elevation by X amount over the course of your ride, you get a bonus point. 2 for the really steep trips.

Jim Leonard Mon May 7 15:48:00 2012
We should get bonus points for the hills around Pittsburgh. I've never lived anywhere where it was harder to bike about (not saying these places don't exist).
Tim Cook Mon May 7 10:06:00 2012
Ditto on the no free beer.
Jon Adrian Webb Mon May 7 09:33:00 2012
BTW, I tried to get my free beer at OTB Saturday and they said they hadn't received their cards yet, so no beer. Sucks.
Also, I had trouble logging miles this weekend, with no apparent response to my clicking the log button. But then I had tons of miles there this morning. Every attempted click eventually showed up.
Kento Ohmori Sun May 6 22:07:00 2012
Clearly people are having trouble with the lag in data.... For me in almost every instance, It just took a little bit of time; the data was there by the time I was showered and changed. If you have entered your data multiple times because it didn't show up, check your "workouts" in an hour or so and delete your duplicates.
Buffalo Buffalo Sat May 5 00:40:00 2012
I seem to have been right: My phone doesn't play well with Pitt's wireless for some dumb reason, and endomondo doesn't seem to upload when i'm on data (which i suppose i'd be thankful for, except i have an unlimited data plan... ah well). However, once I finally got home and on wifi, my routes from today did upload properly, including the one from this morning that had been mysteriously truncated...
george haff Fri May 4 11:28:00 2012
ive seen upload (and download) problems a few times on my android version of endomondo pro. restarting the app sometimes works (though it might take a few tries), and all the old workouts get synced when it regains sanity.
Dan Yablonsky Fri May 4 11:21:00 2012
JI, I haven't heard of any other app issues as bad as that... so it may be the hardware. Hopefully the new phone helps. Let us know.
Casey West Fri May 4 10:42:00 2012
JI Swiderski, using the web site you can record a workout manually. You can either draw the route or just log the distance if you know it. I've had to do that a couple times.
Buffalo Buffalo Fri May 4 09:45:00 2012
Having massive issues with the Android app. Hopefully it's just my phone--yesterday's ride to work evidently didn't save at all; today I rode 2.38 miles in 17:28 according to my phone, but only the first .44 mile has uploaded. New phone is in the mail, hopefully that helps...
Michael Boyd Thu May 3 17:42:00 2012

Tricia Chicka Thu May 3 09:32:00 2012
First OTB pint earned! Word.
Eryn Hughes Wed May 2 11:46:00 2012
Glad to know its not just me, I was wondering why when I added my miles it was posting on some pages but not the total accrued for our team/workplace!
Dan Yablonsky Wed May 2 10:53:00 2012
Your 20 points don't get erased each day, but it does sometimes take a little while for the site to catch up. Be patient with Ye Ol' Endomondo; Pittsburgh has proved a bit too speedy!
p. leon Wed May 2 06:33:00 2012
Confused?

Does the 20 points get erased on a daily basis?

My 20 from yesterday has gone missing...

Here We Go Pittsburgh!

Scott Bricker Sun Apr 29 10:15:00 2012
Todd, you can log your miles anywhere in the world.
Todd Derr Sat Apr 28 14:50:00 2012
If you go riding somewhere else should you log those miles or is it supposed to be only miles in/around Pittsburgh like the old one?
Dan Yablonsky Fri Apr 27 15:28:00 2012
Green Cities Fellows are back on top! And we've pedaling with 1 rider down! Take that, Car Free Fridays!
Dustin J Lee Fri Apr 27 10:00:00 2012
Surely it's too late for this year, but wouldn't it be great if points were awarded based on real work numbers including hill climbs? Lots of apps out there include altitude tracking, perhaps the kind peeps running the endomondo app could add this feature in the next update? Just seems like that would be a more accurate way to compete. One could hypothetically hitch a bus up the hill, and coast down to earn points...not that any of us would do that.
Dan Yablonsky Thu Apr 26 16:14:00 2012
Tori, unfortunately you can only add your points to 1 "team" of 10 people. The "workplace" can register as many riders as you can rally, and thats almost like a second team!
Victoria Managan Thu Apr 26 14:59:00 2012
can you ride for more than just one team?

Hi all, I guess I just joined the team with the Bike Pittsburgh connection. I am riding almost daily from Robinson to W. Penn Hosp. in Bloomfield. It is a joy to pass buy the "Burgh" as I make my way along the North Side trail on my daily ride. It's as much fun on the way home after work.
sandra k kabay Tue Apr 17 17:53:00 2012
I have been commuting to work by bike for the past 7 years. I reside in Shaler and work in downtown Pittsburgh. What a great way to start and end my day.
Dan Yablonsky Wed Apr 11 16:31:00 2012
@ Steve, to the best of my knowledge I'm not sure there's a great remedy for your problem. This is Endomondo's first year hosting the Bike Challenge and they're still working stuff out. I'll bring it to the developer's attention

@ Virginia, log miles like its your job. Because it kind of is.

Virginia McGrath Wed Apr 11 16:10:00 2012
can I include my pedicab miles for the bike challenge!?
Steve Marchitelli Mon Apr 9 13:15:00 2012
My last two rides, the GPS wasn't picking up a signal, so I mapped out and edited the info when I got home. But when I do this, my times reset to zero. Is there a way to do this without losing or having to re-enter my time stats?

Hey Pixburgers! We're doing pretty darn well. We've got the biggest team in the whole country, 213 people! We all want to hit 500 by May 1st so if everyone here gets 1 or 2 friend to join we'll make it for sure.

I also wanted to say... GO TEAM PGH! Joining the challenge is advocacy! Lets show the nation and our local government that we as Pittsburgh bike riders are a presence and we have a voice!

Dan Yablonsky Thu Mar 29 15:39:00 2012
How wrong you are Von Fineberg, SCA Green Cities Fellows came ready to rumble.

Can we get the data from the old car free calc? I had been tracking for over a year...
Eric Schmadel Wed Mar 28 13:34:00 2012
Do I start from when I registered here the other day or should I go back and enter all the days going back to the beginning of January? Does it matter to Bike PGH how many miles we show before the challenge starts?
Mark McCartney Mon Mar 26 16:20:00 2012
It would be nice to see the data be open, or provide for import from other services. Some friends of mine use strava, and it's cumbersome to record miles twice.
http://www.mostlybaked.com/busting-the-silos-of-personal-fitness-data
Dustin J Lee Mon Mar 26 09:33:00 2012
I second Tim Cook's request. It would foster a more dynamic challenge, riders would rally neighborhood friends to join, boosting numbers for Pittsburgh as a whole. We need this!
Billy Epting Fri Mar 23 10:09:00 2012
Getting used to the new interface, it's pretty nice. Are we gonna stick with this interface even past 31 august? I definitely enjoyed tracking my miles all winter.
One tip for the endomondo folks, or Dan: It'd be a bit more streamlined if I didn't have to click "log other" first before the non-commuting options became available on the pull-down list. But no big deal!
Justin Mando Fri Mar 23 08:46:00 2012
Wow, this looks like a huge improvement from the Car-Free Calculator. That was a bit of a chore to use, to say the least.

Good move, BikePGH!

Rachel Dingfelder Thu Mar 22 16:15:00 2012
I loved the old Car Free Friday's calculator, but this one is great too! It's way easier to enter information and there's more to look at on the site. I'm stoked to compete with other cities. My trips are short but they add up!
David Lampe Thu Mar 22 10:37:00 2012
Where are the data from the old bike calculator? I had been keeping track nicely of the last year's progress and, boom, gone.
Dan Yablonsky Thu Mar 22 01:20:00 2012
Tim, I hear you! That would be a fun development. Because we didn't do the design, I'm not sure if we can build that in to this year's challenge. I'll look into it and certainly add to our list of improvements for next year. Good luck and thanks for joining. Don't forget to invite your friends!
Tim Cook Thu Mar 22 00:27:00 2012
Saw on the Leaderboard that you can sort leaders by "Communities" but it only lists "Pittsburgh", generically... it would be really excellent if we could see how much people were riding from each neighborhood... maybe sort it that way? Or, more simply, everyone is entering zip codes, just sort to show which zip code has the most rider-points.

Drewbacca AWD Wed Dec 31 18:00:00 1969
I call BS on at least one CLE rider who has absolutely nothing posted besides Sept 1 when he apparently rode 240 miles? Maybe just the lazy way of entering miles for the month but it looks really bad. I'll assume most are legit, besides that.
